General Guide

Tear Painter is a geonode setup that uses vertex groups and UVmap to create tears in a mesh.

UV map needs to have a default name: “UVMap” for this tool to work. Also make sure that UV islands are of proper size, don’t overlap and that the object has correct scale and rotation.

Layers of detail

Painted weight in Tear Vertex Group will automatically create 4 layers of detail that can be controlled separately in modifier settings.

Setup
Drag&Drop preferred preset onto the object in 3d viewport. Presets are variations of Tear Painter differentiated by default values.

Next up create two vertex groups.

Note: highlighted group is the one you’ll edit when entering weight paint mode.

Now you’re ready to pick vertex group for tears
Once selected you can paint tears in Weight Paint Mode.
Note: Make sure that selected vertex group is active in the vertex group panel.
Second vertex group will come in handy for Mask Border Fuzz.
More details about it in the Border Fuzz section.
